Top Tips on Keeping Your Home Secure Whilst You are Away

Here are our tips on keeping your home safe whilst you’re away.

1. Security Alarm systems are a brilliant way of protecting your assets. As a deterrent to the initial break-in or to scare the perpetrators away when the alarm is set off.

2. Lighting is immensely important in the deterrent stage, as well as alerting neighbours. Sensor activated lights are most effective for the outside of your property. Deterring potential intruders.

3. Investing in timer switches is a great way of giving the illusion of somebody being at home. These can be used for appliances such as lights and radios.

4. Consider outdoor security cameras. Covering all access points can give you great peace of mind. Many systems have the technology to be monitored remotely so you can periodically check up on your home.

5. Update your locks. If your locks are old, they may not be as secure as they used to be. As well as the security advancements that may have happened in reinforced locks. It is also a good idea to check if your locks are compliant with the regulations of your insurance policy. You can use locks within your house to secure specific rooms.

6. Ensure all doors and windows are in good condition and are fitted properly. Make sure they are all locked securely and the keys are out of site and reach. This includes side gates and any other access point. You have heard of cat burglars, so don’t forget to lock your cat flap too. You can buy key fob controlled animal doors for constant added protection.

7. We advise a communication doorbell with caution. They can be great as part of a complete system but cannot be relied on entirely. They are useful in the security of parcels and alerting to people acting suspiciously in sight of your doorbell, this could protect your car.

8. Do not forget to protect assets in your outbuildings, these are often seen as an easy target for both opportunists and well-planned thieves. Ensuring again that side gates are secure. Do not leave anything desirable in view through your shed window or outhouse door.

9. Consider asking a trusted neighbour to manage your bins on bin day and redirect any parcels to them. They could perhaps close your curtains and night time or park on your drive. Make sure you cancel your milk and newspaper deliveries.
